The Best Place to do daily radio calisthenics in Kyoto

Morning Routine

Every day, from 6:30 in the early morning, the radio calisthenics music plays from the radio.

Radio calisthenics, known to every Japanese person. Here in Maruyama Park, familiar faces gather every day, energetically performing Radio Taiso (calisthenics) 1 and 2.

Maruyama Park, also known as a famous cherry blossom spot, is Kyoto's oldest park established in 1886.

With the Higashiyama Mountains as a backdrop, it boasts a vast, scenic stroll garden, serving as a place of relaxation for local residents.

Beautiful scenery

Radio calisthenics take place in front of the Hyoutan Pond, where in spring, we admire the weeping cherry blossoms beautifully changing colors with the sunrise from Mt. Higashiyama.

In early summer, we're surrounded by lush, fresh greenery, and as we transition past the slightly cool hours of summer, autumn presents a stunning backdrop of crimson leaves.

Even in the still dark and cold winters, we continue throughout the year.

Perhaps the energy flow here is excellent.

Various creatures gather, not just humans. Familiar pigeons, crows, and sparrows, of course, but also ducks, skylarks, bulbul birds, tits, white-eyes, long-tailed tits, cormorants, kingfishers, and you can hear the songs of bush warblers.

Dogs on walks, local cats, and everyone's favorite, Chi-chan the heron, appeared here as a fledgling bird two and a half years ago. Meeting such animals, along with the seniors of life and travelers, during the radio calisthenics in Maruyama Park, is an indispensable part of starting my day with energy.

Do you know the Japanese proverb 'Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise'?

I encourage everyone to visit Maruyama Park in the early morning.
