Discover Beautiful Tranquility at the Amazing Takaragaike Park

Enchanting Kyoto International Conference Center Exterior

Kyoto boasts numerous fascinating parks that attract both locals and tourists. Among them is Takaragaike Park, a hidden gem worth visiting. Have you had the chance to explore it yet? Allow me to share my experience of seeing the park for the first time.

Upon leaving from the 4-2 exit, you will come across a long-covered bridge that spans a small river lined with trees called the Iwakura River.

A little further ahead, you will reach the Kyoto International Conference Center, known for its unique design featuring distinctive shapes and concrete that seamlessly blend with the surrounding flora.

A Serene Retreat: Takaragaike Pond

If you head southwest, you will eventually enter the Iris Garden, which, if you continue eastward, will reveal one of the most stunning views I have discovered in Kyoto so far: the Takaragaike Pond. This pond, which, was expanded in 1959, is more like a lake than a typical pond. The scene is tranquil, with distant mountains and a deck surrounded by trees creating a picturesque setting. Sometimes at the deck, you can see koi fish in the water hoping to be fed.

This is also an area where visitors can rent boats. Boat rentals come with two options, regular row boats or paddle boats. While I did not plan on riding the boat this time, I am considering it for my next visit. The paddle boat looked sturdy and promised a smooth and steady ride. The tranquil surface of the water invited a playful adventure, making exploring the pond's hidden corners by boat irresistibly fun. The boat rental was operated by two friendly older gentlemen who were kind to my girlfriend and me, providing polite responses and warm smiles. The cost of renting a paddle boat is 1,000 Yen for 30 minutes, while a row boat costs 1,000 Yen per hour.

Art and Refreshments: Estampida and Shaved Ice

As you explore further, you’ll find an intriguing sculpture called "Estampida," which depicts several horses running free. Nearby, you'll find a small shop selling shaved ice, restrooms, and several vending machines.

Trails and Tranquility: Walking Paths and Wildlife

Numerous trails offer pleasant walks, and at night, rows of lamps light your path. There are plenty of open areas for anyone who wants to have a picnic where you can lay a blanket or use a table and bench in many locations throughout the park. I found a perfect spot away from the sun to lay my blanket. I could feel the cool breeze, and the conditions were just right and quiet for having a nap. The peaceful surroundings, frequented by deer and other wildlife, make it a perfect spot for wildlife photography, including birds. Depending on the season, rare colorful birds, and signs provide helpful pictures of what birds make their home or migrate to the park.

Family Fun: Children’s Park

If you have children, you'll be delighted to discover Takaragaike Park's charming children's area, featuring an expansive play zone. Boasting an array of captivating and engaging activities, it's the perfect destination for boundless family enjoyment. Additionally, parents can relax in the shaded seating area while watching their children play. During my visit, I observed the children's excitement as they climbed what appeared to be a small hill and gleefully slid down from it. It's a place where boredom is not a word that exists here for them. So why not plan your next outing here? With its serene views to the north of the city, it promises a tranquil escape for the whole family.
