From Experience to Growth: Children's Space, "YUME School Kyoto Nijo Campus"

In recent years, alternative education options such as free schools have been gaining attention as choices for children who are not attending regular schools. This time, we had the opportunity to hear from "YUME School Kyoto Nijo Campus," a free school in Kyoto known for its experiential classes!

About YUME School Kyoto Nijo Campus

YUME School Kyoto Nijo Campus was established in 2021 with the aim of providing a place for children who are increasingly not attending regular schools nationwide to have opportunities to learn and interact outside of school. Our school aims to create a space where communication and social skills can be developed. Additionally, attending our free school for a day counts as attendance at a regular school, expanding future options. We provide a safe place for children who find it difficult to commute to school to learn comfortably.

What kind of classes?

The main feature of YUME School Kyoto Nijo Campus is that classes primarily focus on learning through experiences. We incorporate many "experiential classes" such as experiments, cooking workshops, and crafts, where students can enjoy while communicating. Even when trying something for the first time, challenging oneself can lead to discoveries like "I really enjoy this," which can boost confidence. Additionally, as part of experiential learning, extracurricular classes such as bowling and tie-dyeing workshops are also offered.

Additionally, a unique class offered is "Social Skills Training," commonly known as "SST." For example, topics like "How to get along with someone you've just met?" or "How to handle persistent interactions" are taught by a psychologist through role-playing exercises. It's content that even adults would find valuable.

YUME School Kyoto Nijo Campus has students ranging from elementary school to high school. Since classes are not divided by grade levels, children of various ages attend classes together and get along well. Spending time together across different ages creates a relationship where they can rely on each other, fostering growth for all. It's said that younger students look up to the older ones as their older siblings. It's a wonderful dynamic!

Daily Curriculum

We open at 10:00 am every morning. The first hour starts with "Story Time." They talk about trivial things like "What did you have for dinner last night?" It's not only a time for talking but also for warming up to speaking and listening, which is why it's scheduled for the first hour. The second hour is a whole group lesson, lunchtime is for eating lunch together, and the afternoon is for self-study. During self-study time, some children work on print learning, while others may be programming on computers or practicing the piano. It's a time for each individual to quietly focus on their tasks. Afterward, there's another whole group lesson, and from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm is free time. Board games that everyone enjoys playing together are the children's favorites. The classroom is stocked with a huge variety of board games for them to choose from.

The charm of YUME School Kyoto Nijo Campus lies in the variety of experiences available every day.
